This is a ceramic ritual object (paccha) meant to offer the ceremonial drink of the Andes, the corn bear or chichi, to the Earth. The liquid enters through the small urpu or jar at the top, and goes out through the lower end of the elongated object. The object has a shape of a vertical pole with a curved element in the middle; it represents the Andean foot plow or chaquitaqlla, tillage tool used by Andean farmers to remove the soil. This tool was made in wood, with some elements of metal and leather ties, but this piece represents it in pottery. To understand the significance of these objects and their use, we must consider both the meanings of the urpu as a container for the chicha, the celebratory drink, and the function of the chaquitaqlla as an instrument for human labor. Some organic remains inside similar objects in other museums have been analyzed and these show that what was poured inside was chicha, the corn bear. These analyses also show sand residues contained within, which reveal that these objects were inserted into the soil, so that the chicha would be shared with the Earth. These pacchas are objects that were used in pairs in agricultural rituals, probably at the time of first irrigation. A community, probably organized in halves (either in the upper half of the community and other half of the bottom, or a group of men and a group of women) would then offer the product of their work to the Pachamama, asking for a plentiful agricultural year.
