description | A LARGE BLUE AND WHITE IMPERIAL FLOWER VASE, China, Wanli six-character mark and period, together with a possible later vase matching the pair – Property from an old German private collection – The design on the present vases is very rare and only one other smaller blue and white vase has been published by Christie’s New York, 16.9.2010, Lot 1321 so far. A Wucai Wanli vase of this design is illustrated by A. du Boulay‘Christie’s Pictorial History of Chinese Ceramics’Oxford, 1984, p. 170, pl. 1, another wucai example in the Matsuoka Art Museum, Japan is illustrated in Mayuyama, Seventy Years, Vol. 1, Japan, 1976, pl. 916 – One vase with restoration to rim, the second vase with very short hairline to rim and a firing crack above the stand |
