These decorative panels of tin-glazed ceramic tiles were installed as skirting in palaces of the day to protect and embellish the walls. The central medallion here features an allegory of virtue. Tile panels with painted scenes became popular in Spain thanks to Nicoluso Pisano, an Italian ceramicist who worked in Seville in the early 16th century.
