Vase with Moon-white Glaze, Jun Ware
The vase has the roundness of a water drop about to fall. Its long neck flares from the lower part to the top and ends up with a clearly-defined rim. The vase is coated with moon-white glaze, except for the foot ring and the rim. The foot ring is glazed in dark reddish brown, while at the rim the color of the clay is exposed due to the glaze pulling away.
Located in central China’s Henan province, the Jun kiln complex is one of the five famous kiln complexes in the Song dynasty. Jun ware has a sturdy body and thick glaze coat. The glazes are mainly moon-white and sky-blue with occasional mauve splashes.
With a special shape and even glaze coat, this vase is considered a superb vernacular product. Non-official kilns in the Jun kiln complex primarily produced daily accoutrements including bowls, dishes, vases, and jars in sky-blue or lighter with a tinge of green.
