This jar features two different peony designs: one up at the shoulder, and another that covers most of the body. But while the peony design on the shoulder was made with thin line engravings, the design of peonies and scrolling vines on the body was made with the sgraffito technique, wherein the surface layer of one material is scraped away to reveal a darker underlayer. First, a brush was used to apply white clay to the surface of the jar. Then the white clay was carved to make the peony design, and finally the excess white clay was scraped away to reveal the darker base clay that forms the background of the peony design. The mouth and base were not covered by white clay, and the borders between the covered and uncovered areas are quite rough and haphazard. There are sets of either two or three dividing lines circling the vessel on the neck, shoulder, and waist, respectively.
