Sancai (three-color) ware produced during the Nara period (710-794) under the influence of Tang sancai ware is called "Nara sancai ware", one of the best known wares being "Shoso-in sancai", named after the treasure house holding mostly 8th-century royal objects. This almost neck-less jar is known in Japan as yakko (literally meaning 'medicine jar'), some examples of which were used for containing cremated bones. White and yellow (or brown) glazes are dotted onto the green-glazed background, though parts of the glaze reveal exfoliation and silvery shine due to weathering. The jar is said to have been excavated in Icoma County, Nara Prefecture during the Ansei era (1854-59) of the Edo period and was formerly in the possession of the Hirase family of Osaka.

• Object Notes(japanese): 奈良時代に唐三彩の影響の下につくられた三彩は「奈良三彩」と呼ばれており、いわゆる「正倉院三彩」がその代表です。本作は薬壺（やっこ）とよばれる形の短頸壺で、火葬蔵骨器としての出土例が知られています。緑釉を基調に白釉と黄釉（褐釉）が点じられていますが、風化のため釉の剥落や銀化（ぎんか）が随処に見られます。江戸時代の安政年間(1854－59)に奈良県生駒郡で出土したと伝えられ、大阪の平瀬家に伝来したものです。
