“Moon jars”—named for their spherical body, reminiscent of the full moon— are one of the most iconic vessels representing the artistic achievement of Joseon white porcelain. Moon jars were made primarily during the 17th century. Their voluminous body and elegant curves have been captivating art lovers, as well as ordinary homemakers, since the mid-Joseon Period. Because of their size, moon jars were extremely difficult to produce. Joseon potters had to make the upper and lower halves separately and then join them to complete the body. A close look at the horizontal center of this jar reveals the line where the two halves were connected.
