The source of the name “TOKATAN” refers to the phase from a classical Chinese poem. The complex scenery of the thoroughly fused gentle red glaze, including a tinge of pink, scarlet, dark gray, creates the checkered scenery. This portrays a heartwarming feeling of the Chinese poet who was deeply impressed by a friend’s warm welcome and send-off, and expressed his praises in a poem that ‘his profound thoughtfulness is beyond the depth of TOKATAN’ (the depthless river in China). Inside the large, trimmed foot of the piece, the ‘RAKU’ mark of Kichizaemon XV is impressed.
