This sculptural ceramic bottle represents a trumpeter man, wearing a shirt with stepped motif design, circular shaped earrings, face and body painting, and loading a bag in the back and another bag in his left arm. He holds a conch of Strombus sp. that was used in the Andes as a ceremonial trumpet, known as pututo or waylla kepa. The Strombus is a warm water seashell associated with the cycle of water. In the Andean worldview, water originates in the sea and then returns to the earth as rainfall, and via rivers and canals it irrigates the land and causes plants to flourish. The pututos, with their natural spiral shape produce a strong, deep sound, and were played by trumpeters in ceremonies associated with water. They have been found in groups of offerings in important temples from about 1000 BC In ancient Peru ceramic trumpets were also made, and their designs recreated the shape of these seashells. (UH)

Esta botella de cerámica Mochica representa un hombre trompetero, que viste una camisa con dise?os geométricos escalonados, lleva orejeras en forma de pendientes circulares, pintura facial y corporal, y carga una bolsa en la espalda y otra bolsa en el brazo izquierdo. Entre las dos manos sostiene un caracol Strombus sp. el cual es un molusco de aguas cálidas que fue utilizado en los Andes como trompeta ceremonial, conocida como pututo o waylla kepa y que está relacionado al ciclo del agua. En la cosmovisión andina el agua tiene como origen el mar y regresa a la tierra en forma de lluvia, que irriga las tierras y las hace reverdecer. Los pututos, con su natural forma en espiral, producían al ser soplados un profundo y fuerte sonido, y eran tocados por trompeteros en ceremonias relacionadas al agua. Se les encuentra en conjuntos de ofrendas en importantes templos desde aproximadamente el 1000 a.C. En el antiguo Perú también se confeccionó trompetas de cerámica recreando la forma de este caracol marino. (UH)
