The Moche hero Ai Apaec (so named by Rafael Larco, meaning "the maker” in Muchik language) is modeled in this sculptural ceramic bottle. Ai Apaec is a Moche personage characterized by wearing a belt and ear ornaments with snake heads, fangs in his face, and a headdress that varies according to the context in which he is located as part of his quest, since he travels through different worlds performing his heroic deeds. In this case, he wears a headdress comprised by two tufts in the form of the ulluchu fruit and a head of an owl. In his back he exhibits a feline skin, an ornament he also uses in the rituals of consumption and offering of coca leaves. Both coca leaves and the fruits of ulluchu (Guarea sp.) used by the Moche in their ceremonies, come from the east of the Andes, the humid and rainy region. In scenes painted on the ceramic vessels, which represent the rainbow, rain and consumption rituals, Ai Apaec is depicted in the same attitude of prayer as in this sculptural bottle. (UH)
