These four ceramic pots are producedaccording to an interpretation of a traditionalstyle of Cypriot pottery. They are displayedas functional objects (contrary to theirinstallation in previous cases indoors),planted with roses and positioned in thecourtyard of the entrance to the CyprusPavilion. Panayiotou has invited AnnaMaria di Sgarabottolo, an ancient rosecollector and researcher based in the greaterPadova area, to select from her collection ofancient garden roses a specific type for hispots. It is an aromatic variety of rose fromthe Rose Noisettes genus; established via anexchange of seeds between the Noisettebrothers in Paris and South Carolina duringthe early nineteenth century. The Noisette roses are thus charged with the symbolismof identity, time, and displacement. Thework’s title, The Abominable Mystery, isdrawn from Charles Darwin’s confusion atthe inexplicable reappearance of flowers,hundreds of millions of years after the firstplants emerged.
