Kakiemon style of Arita ware, which developed by adopting Chinese techniques, was brought to perfection in the Enpo era (1673-81), is known for its distinctive elegant overglaze decoration effectly leaving space to show the glossy milky white body color. These charming lively figures made by molding are sumo wrestlers, the topknots and belts of which reveal traces of gold paint. Kakiemon-style wares, exported to Europe, held sway over the people there. Examples similar to this piece have been found in the palace of England, suggesting that it was also made for export to Europe.
