This blackware stirrup spout bottle is characteristic of northern coastal ware of Peru, which tended to emphasize three-dimensionality over surface decoration. The beautiful black surface was created by first burnishing, which would give it a high gloss, then firing the vessel in a "smudging" atmosphere. The vessel takes the form of a bound llama lying on its side. These highland animals were fundamental to the ancient Peruvian economy.
