Born into a family of Kyoto merchants, what first started for Eisen as a hobby producing pottery became much more when he became the first potter to produce porcelain in Kyoto. He was a teacher to future masters of Kyoto pottery such as Aoki Mokuber and others. Originally a pot that was later turned into a tea ceremony water jar, Eisen’s specialty was imitating Chinese styles and created this piece in underglaze blue with unrestrained red and green overglaze.
