This is a sculptural glazed ceramic bottle which also functions as a whistling vessel, from the early colonial times (the first 150 years after the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire). The hunt of the deer, a topic that has been present in Peruvian pre-Columbian art from early times, has been replaced by a scene of submission of a big feline to a personage with power. The seated personage wears a nose ring, which indicates his high rank. What is being represented is the subjugation of one of the major deities of the Andean pantheon, the puma, reflecting the effect of the process of Extirpation of Idolatries in the Andean region by the Spanish Colonial power. (UH)
