description | A DOUCAI CHICKEN CUP. Qing Dynasty, 18th Century. Finely potted with rounded sides rising from a countersunk base to a gently flared rim, the exterior delicately outlined in underglaze blue and painted in bright translucent enamels of yellow, green, olive green and iron-red of shaded tones, one side with a cockerel turned back to see the hen lowered to observe one of the three surrounding chicks, the reverse with a further cockerel leading a hen and three chicks, the two scenes divided on one side by jagged underglaze-blue rocks with flowers emerging from them, the base inscribed in underglaze blue with a six-character Chenghua mark within a double square, 4cm H, 9.5cm diameter.
