description | The vase is carved with a band of leafy peony scroll bearing two large blossoms above a band of upright petals and below a band of inverted petals,and is covered with an olive-green glaze that pools in the carved recesses and continues into the interior and covers the base. The foot ring is left unglazed,revealing the grey body burnt orange in the fring. PROVENANCE Private collection,South America,acquired prior to 1930. The shape and decoration of this vase are similar to that of a vase in the collection of Mrs. Alfred Clark illustrated by G. St. G. M. Gompertz,Chinese Celadon Wares,London,1981,pl. 81,which has an additional band of cash motifs between the main peony band on the body and the inverted petals on the neck,and was later sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong from the T. Y. Chao Private and Family Trust,18 November 1986,lot 28. Another similar vase,lacking the cash band was sold at Sotheby’s London,18 July 1961,lot 26. |
