A similarly well-modeled Tang painted pottery horse and male rider from the collection of H.E. Giovanni Gronchi is illustrated by M. Prodan, The Art of the T’ang Potter, New York 1960, p. 68, no. 21.

Oxford Authentication Ltd. thermoluminesence test no. 366h96 is consistent with the dating of this lot.

We have sought to record changes in the condition of this piece acquired after its initial manufacture.

– repair to the horse’s four legs, muzzle, one ear, tail, and to the lady’s right arm and neck
– the head has been off and restuck
– the pigments may have been refreshed
– a TL test hole is drilled to the back of the lady’s head
