description The porcelains from the end of Ming Jiajing, Wanli Dynasty are multicolored in characteristic, much appreciated by collectors. Some experts say the firing of colourful porcelains are from the beginning Xuande, some said that it is from the beginning Jiajing. The former took possession of a multicolored porcelain from the Potala Palace to prove his theory. If this theory is recognized by all, then this piece is undoubtedly a Zhengde Guanyao. Its shape, glaze, painting and seal are very close to other typical official Guanyao in the Zhengde years. And the Zhengde period is immediately after Jiajing period.
In 1986, the Beijing Palace Museum expert Feng Xianming suggested he once saw some newly discovered polychrome glaze porcelains in Jingdezhen. The porcelain glaze were white, red, blue and red, white with malachite green, white-green, yellow and green color, etc. Feng confirmed the discovery is the most prosperous polychrome porcelain kiln in the late Ming Dynasty, which was actually established in the Yongle period.
“Ming Ying Zong Shilu”records, Zhengtong three years, ban official Jiangxi porcelain kilns to fire blue and white porcelain for export or give out as a gift. Offenders will sentence to death, and family members will be exile.“Zhengtong twelve years,”ban the state capital of Jiangxi Rao province to produce yellow, purple, red, green, cyan, blue, white, blue and white porcelain for private sale. Offenders will be sentence to death, men in the household will be exile to join the military. Citizens who have known and not report will be treated in the same way.“Jingtai five years,” production of porcelain in Rao province has reduced to one third.“Tianshun three years,”Guanglu Temple petitioned the state capital of Jiangxi Rao porcelain to fire more than a total of one hundred thirty-three thousand porcelains, because of hardship in producing the great amount, the production was reduced by 80 000. From the literature, it proved as early as before Ming period, Wucai was use as emphasis on porcelains, colorful red, yellow, purple, green, cyan, blue and other colors was applied.
Hongzhi period before Zhengde. The Taipei Palace Museum once held a Ming Hongzhi mark Wucai Dragon Dish, particularly rare in nature, treasure of China. It was carved dragons on glaze, glaze with malachite green, plum red, yellow and other colors. It marked the mature period of multicolored glaze. Another example in the Taipei Palace Museum was a yellow and green ‘dragon’ high foot bowl, with wide mouth, narrow lip, deep potted body, the outer bowl ornamented with painted dragons, smooth inner walls without decoration, eggshell yellow glaze, green color filled pattern with ornaments. Bowl bottom lays“Hongzhi”seal filled with green color. The color white, green, yellow and green was the characteristics of Hongzhi.
Some experts pointed out, according to Ming Zhengde ceramic firing process, its shape, decorative motifs were inherited from the previous tradition with additional innovation contributing to an unique style. Zhengde Wucai porcelain characterized by white glaze and directly painted on with colorful decorations. Zhengde multicolored glaze porcelain are fine productions, using mainly red, green and yellow and mostly green and malachite green, light green and yellow. Some artifacts used yellow-green color, red color embellishment providing contrast to chromatic ornamentation, adding liveliness to the piece.
Wucai porcelains are common in Jiajing and Wanli Dynasty, some passed along in later eras, the majority of this type went to the highest bidders. This rare Wucai Zhengde porcelain is the treasure of China.
