The term “buncheong” literally means “powdered celadon,” and was coined by Korean art historian Go Yu-seop (1905-1944) to refer to stoneware with a charcoal gray body that is decorated with a white slip coat and then covered in green-tinted semi-translucent glaze. Buncheong ware was first made in the 15th century, during the early Joseon period, and is now among the most representative styles of Korean ceramics. As opposed to the highly refined beauty of Goryeo celadon works, buncheong ware is known for its dynamic, carefree designs that are made using the white slip, as well as iron pigment. This large jar has an immense, voluminous body, which is characteristic of early buncheong ware. The surface, which exemplifies the white slip coating and transparent glaze, is decorated with vivacious designs created with stamping and inlay techniques.
