This is a sculptural glazed ceramic bottle which also functions as a whistling vessel, from the early colonial times (the first 150 years after the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire). This vessel shows how the symbolic and metaphoric sense of the pre-Columbian iconography gives way to a more literal sense. This ceramic whistling vessel of the transition period conveys its function explicitly by representing a personage who whistles, coming out from one of the peaks of the bottle, lifting the lid of it on his back. This form of funerary ritual vessel fell into disuse, because after the Spanish conquest and the colonial evangelization, Andean mortuary practices were replaced by Catholic funerary rites. (UH)
