This sculptural ceramic whistling bottle depicts a scene of ritual consumption of chicha, ceremonial dance and ancestor worship. It comprises a bottle with a long spout that is connected to a cubic volume on which the scene has been modeled. Eight personages participate in the scene. At the center is the personage represented in a larger scale, dressed in robes and a large headdress with a crescent shaped ornament. He wears circular ear ornaments, a necklace, and holds the hands of two smaller characters that are also dressed in robes, crescent-shape headdresses, and necklaces. Two musicians complete the round, one beats a drum and the other holds a pitcher. In the center of the round is a seated figure with two pitchers with ropes around their necks, and a bowl. This scene seems to refer to a ceremony that involves toast, dance and music. On one of the frontal sides of the bottle the image of the personage with crescent-shape headdress, circular ear ornaments, shirt and loincloth, flanked by two birds with crescent headdress is portrayed. This image represents the deified ancestor, who is often depicted in Chimu art. (UH)

(UH)
