Each vase was created from a complete lidded jar. A French craftsman created a larger lid by cutting the jar at its shoulder and joining it to the small original lid. These smiling seated figures with long earlobes, dressed in monks' robes, represent the popular Buddhist god of good fortune or contentment, known as Budai (Put'ai) in China and Ho-teiin Japan. In the 1700s, Europeans called these figures magots, meaning bizarre or grotesque figures in a Chinese or Japanese style, modeled in a variety of poses. Pair of Lidded Vases (vases à têtes de bouc) – Possibly modeled by Michel-Dorothée Coudray, Finished by Nantier, Sèvres Manufactory
塞佛國立瓷器廠about 1768 该作品的收藏者: Documents in the Sèvres porcelain manufactory archives call these vessels vases à têtes de bouc ("goat's head" vases), after their elaborate handles modeled in the form of rams' heads with grape vines hanging from their mouths. Despite their removable stoppers, these vases were purely decorative objects, serving no practical purpose. The distinctive decoration of bold patterns in gilding over a dark blue ground is typical of a style popular in the 1760s. The Sèvres manufactory only introduced this deep blue glaze, known first as bleu nouveau (new…

Pair of Lidded Vases – Unknown

Jesuit missionaries brought this pigment, known as Purple of Cassius, to China in the 1680s, and it first appeared on porcelain around 1700. The color varied from pink to purple, depending on the kiln temperature. Chinese factories used the pink enamel mainly on vessels that were being made for export to Europe, rather than for Chinese consumers. 作品介绍 标题: Pair of Lidded Vases 创作者: Unknown 日期: about 1730…

The form copies a traditional Chinese design known today as a ginger jar, with flat shoulders and a wide, curving base. The term Indianische Blumenderives from the name of the largest European importer of Asian ceramics…

塞佛國立瓷器廠about 1760 该作品的收藏者: Roasted and peeled chestnuts were a particular delicacy in the 1700s, served as a dessert with a coating of icing in bowls such as this pair. Factories generally sold the bowls singly, though they also came in pairs as part of a dinner or dessert service. The Sèvres porcelain manufactory's stock books list several different designs for chestnut bowls. For bowls with pierced decoration, such as this pair, customers would have to pay nearly twice as much as for less intricate examples. It took all the skills…

塞佛國立瓷器廠, Pierre-Philippe Thomireabout 1785 该作品的收藏者: These lidded bowls were intended to hold potpourri, the smell of which passed through the pierced collar. Containers for potpourri first appeared in the 1700s in France and were soon produced in large numbers from gold, silver, porcelain, or lacquer. To create potpourri, fashionable women experimented with dried petals and spices to achieve the finest fragrances, some of which were left to mature for up to nine years. Perfumes and potpourri were used liberally to disguise malodorous air, as indoor plumbing was nonexistent and frequent…

The greater availability of Chinese and Japanese porcelain from the mid-1600s onwards increased interest in this exotic material.
